Terms and Conditions

Last updated: April 2026

These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Ethos web application, APIs, and associated services ("Service"). By registering an account and accessing the Service, you signify your agreement to comply with these rules.

1. Use of Service and Conduct

Ethos is a cognitive system designed for personal journaling, project tracking, and secure memory storage. You agree to use the Service strictly in accordance with applicable laws. You must not attempt unauthorized access, disrupt the infrastructure securing our users' data, or run automated exploitation scripts against our APIs.

2. Subscription, Quotas, and Exact Billing

Access to certain features requires a subscription to paid tiers (Pro, Premium). Subscriptions are billed in advance on a recurring monthly or annual basis. We account for your storage use exactly down to the byte. Storage limits corresponding to your plan tier are enforced actively; there are no hidden overage charges, only hard limits. You may cancel your subscription at any time.

3. Total Data Ownership

You retain absolutely all rights and ownership to the data, writing, images, and content you submit to your Ethos account. We claim zero intellectual property rights over your journal entries. It is your life; we simply house it.

4. Vault Recovery Zero-Knowledge Disclaimer

Because the Vault utilizes client-side AES-256-GCM encryption, we have a pristine zero-knowledge architecture concerning its contents. We cannot recover, reset, or retrieve your vaulted data if you lose your authentication credentials and local master key. You assume full and absolute responsibility for maintaining your capability to decrypt your Vault.

5. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranty of any kind, whether explicit or implied. We strive for extreme reliability, but we do not guarantee mathematically uninterrupted access or entirely error-free continuous operation.

6. Account Termination and Fair Use

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that actively abuse our systems, attempt security bypasses, or repeatedly violate bandwidth and infrastructure fair-use boundaries. If we terminate an account for abuse, no prorated refunds will be issued.

7. Fair Use of AI Tokens

AI capabilities available on premium tiers are subject to a soft fair-use limit to prevent infrastructure abuse. While generous enough for heavy daily use, automated or programmatic spamming of the AI insight routes is prohibited.

8. Third-Party Sign-In

You may create or access an Ethos account using Google Sign-In. If Google confirms that an email address is verified and it matches an existing Ethos account, Ethos may link that Google sign-in method to the existing account. You remain responsible for maintaining control of your Google account and for unlinking Google Sign-In or setting a password before removing your last usable sign-in method.
